WE HAVE ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you use non-nano zinc oxide?

Yes, we use non-nano zinc oxide in our formulations.

Why do you use tallow in your sunscreen? Is it also eco-conscious or cruelty-free?

Tallow delivers vitamins A, D, E, and K—nutrients known to support healthy, resilient skin. Its fatty-acid profile closely matches our own sebum, so it absorbs readily and helps reinforce your skin’s natural barrier.

We source from grass-fed cattle raised on regenerative pastures without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

By using tallow that would otherwise go to waste as a by-product of the food industry, we minimize waste and reduce pressure on land resources compared to certain seed-oil production methods.

Is there a risk of Mad Cow Disease?

There is ZERO risk of Mad Cow Disease. We source our tallow from Australia which has no record of the disease.

Additionally, our tallow goes through a rigorous purification process that removes proteins and other impurities.

Why doesn’t your tallow have a beefy smell?

We use a process called Wet Rendering to purify our tallow. This method uses only water and mild natural substances like baking soda—no harsh chemicals or toxic solvents like hexane. By keeping the temperature low, we preserve the tallow’s essential nutrients and vitamins while ensuring there’s no lingering beef smell.

Will this attract insects?

Our sunscreen is refined to remove any impurities that may cause insect attraction.

Is it comedogenic? Will it clog my pores and cause acne?

Sky and Sol sunscreen is specially formulated to be non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores. In fact, tallow closely resembles the structure of the oils naturally produced by our skin, so it's readily absorbed and extremely beneficial. However, everyone's skin is different. We recommend doing a patch test before trying any new cosmetics.

Is it effective in blocking out UVA and UVB (Broad Spectrum)?

Absolutely! It is formulated to provide broad-spectrum protection, which means it effectively shields your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkling and age spots, while UVB rays can burn your skin. Too much exposure to either can lead to skin cancer.

Our active ingredient, non-nano zinc oxide, is a mineral that is highly effective at blocking out both types of harmful rays, keeping your skin safe and healthy under the sun. It's recommended by the FDA due to it's safety and effectiveness.

Is it safe for my kids?

Formulated with natural, skin-compatible ingredients free of harsh chemicals, our formula is designed to be gentle on sensitive skin. Dermatologist-tested for use on children.

Why not make DIY Sunscreen?

The mixing method, particle size of zinc oxide, and the texture all affect SPF in dramatically different ways. So with homemade sunscreens, you don't know what level SPF you'll get.

It's important to know for a fact that you are protected, especially when dealing with life-changing consequences like skin cancer.

How often should I reapply? Is this water resistant?

We recommend reapplying every 2 hours during sun exposure. If you're swimming or sweating, reapply immediately after towel drying. It provides up to 90 minutes of protection in water.

Is this makeup and skin-care routine compatible?

Of course! It's non-greasy and absorbs beautifully into the skin, making it an excellent primer for makeup.

It also does not interfere with your routine, such as vitamin C or moisturizer treatment (in fact, our product does make a good moisturizer too)!

Is your sunscreen HSA/FSA eligible?

Yes. For more details, please see the link here.

What is the texture like?

The texture is described as a rich, spreadable cream. It leaves a non-greasy and nourishing feel on the skin.

What is the tube made out of?

Our brown tube is made out of waterproof kraft paper, which is an ecofriendly and safe alternative to traditional packaging!

While our aluminum tube is made out of aluminum. There is an inert and safe epoxy resin interior coating to prevent the sunscreen from touching the aluminum itself.

Where does Sky and Sol source its tallow, and why is it eco-friendly?

We source our tallow from regenerative pastures in Australia, where cows are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished and the fields are not sprayed with pesticides. This method restores soil health, captures carbon, and keeps our tallow pure and toxin-free.

Where can I find the expiry date, and how long does the product stay fresh?

The expiry date is printed on the back of the product. It has a shelf life of three years when stored properly in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Since we don’t use synthetic preservatives, the freshness of the product depends on storage conditions. Once opened, we recommend using it within 12 months for the best experience.

Why is this sunscreen hard to wash off?

Our sunscreen is water-resistant, meaning it stays on your skin to provide long-lasting protection. If a sunscreen washes off too easily, it might not be doing its job! To remove it effectively, use an oil-based cleanser or a gentle scrub with soap and water.

Is your tallow environmentally friendly?

We source our tallow exclusively from regenerative pastures—agricultural systems that focus on restoring soil health, increasing biodiversity, and naturally capturing carbon from the atmosphere. This thoughtful approach helps support climate resilience while fostering a more balanced, sustainable environment where both livestock and nature can thrive together.

What is Flex and what is its relationship with Sky & Sol?

Sky & Sol has partnered with Flex to allow customers to use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for eligible purchases. This lets you use pre-tax dollars to buy qualifying Sky & Sol products, which may result in 30–40% net savings depending on your tax bracket.

How do I pay with my HSA or FSA card?

Add eligible Sky & Sol products to your cart and proceed to checkout. Select “Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA” as your payment method, enter your HSA or FSA debit card details, and complete checkout. If you do not see the Flex option, you may be logged into Shop Pay. Please select “checkout as guest” or use an incognito browser window to view all payment options.

Can I split payment between my HSA or FSA card and a credit or debit card?

Yes. Flex supports split payments. If your HSA or FSA card does not have sufficient funds to cover the full purchase, you can use your HSA or FSA card for the available balance and cover the remaining amount with a credit or debit card during checkout.

What if I don’t have my HSA or FSA card available?

You can still select “Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA” at checkout and use a credit or debit card. Flex will email you an itemized receipt that you can submit to your HSA or FSA provider for reimbursement.

Why can’t I see Flex as a payment option?

The most common reason is that you are logged into Shop Pay. Logging out of Shop Pay or completing checkout in an incognito or private browser window will allow all available payment methods, including Flex, to appear.

Why was my HSA or FSA card declined?

HSA and FSA cards function like debit cards. The most common reason for a decline is insufficient funds. Please contact your HSA or FSA administrator to confirm your balance and eligibility.

I submitted my Flex receipt but my FSA provider is requesting more information. What should I do?

Please forward the request from your FSA provider to us. We will coordinate with Flex to help provide any additional documentation needed.

I did not receive my Flex email with my itemized receipt. What should I do?

Please check your spam or junk folder, as emails may be filtered automatically. Flex emails are typically sent from notifications@withflex.com. If you still cannot find it, please contact support@withflex.com and include the email address used for your order.

My Sky & Sol receipt total does not match what my HSA or FSA was charged. Why?

This may occur when a cart includes both eligible and non-eligible items, when split payments are used, or when discounts or taxes are allocated across payment methods. Please contact us and we will review the charges and follow up with clarification or a correction if needed.

Is sales tax covered by HSA or FSA funds?

Yes. Sales tax on eligible items is covered by HSA or FSA funds. If your cart includes both eligible and non-eligible items or uses split payment, taxes are allocated proportionally based on item eligibility and payment method.

My HSA or FSA claim was denied. What should I do?

We recommend confirming eligibility with your HSA or FSA provider before purchasing, as employer-sponsored FSAs may apply restrictions beyond IRS guidelines. If you believe your claim was denied in error, please send us the response from your provider so we can review it with Flex and advise on next steps.

Can I purchase now and submit for FSA reimbursement in a future year?

This depends on your specific FSA plan. Most FSAs require purchases to be made during the active coverage year, though some plans allow a short grace or submission window. HSAs are different and generally allow reimbursement at any time, even in future years. Please review your plan details to confirm.

Can past Sky & Sol purchases made without Flex be reimbursed?

It depends on your account type. HSA holders may submit an itemized receipt for reimbursement at any time. FSA holders typically must have made the purchase during the same calendar year as their coverage. For the smoothest reimbursement experience, we recommend using Flex at checkout for HSA or FSA purchases.
